Not that long ago we bought some tools from you. One of them, 2383HT01-1AY (swagging tool), got broken.

 broken tool 2383HT01-1AY tips

One of our composite workers (rather experienced guy) went about installing grommets on a panel tightening the grommet when the threaded tip of the tool snapped off.

The task performed was done according to the manual so we wonder why that has happened. When repairing panels, more pressure needs to be apparently used than when installing grommets on a new panel so we need to make sure the swagging tool will be adequate for our future work.

Now, can we send the tool back for a repair? It needs to be seen whether the pin inside can be replaced as replacing the whole thing is just too costly for us. I wonder if you have had other incidents like that or know what the problem is. You see,  we need to make sure the tool will do the job for us, or else it’s useless.

according to the report from the worker involved and to my conversation with him, the incident happened while installing grommets, not removing them. We have the removal tool as well and it works fine and with no troubles.

Unfortunately the worker has now refused to work with the swagging tool again fearing it could happen again and he would be hold accountable so we in the tool store are anxious to make sure this problem will not recur, not to mention the financial costs.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Answer:

The Tool 2383HT01-1AY was checked by our engineering.

The inner tension bolt was broken due to a possible high force.

We have further noticed that the forming conus at the front end of the tool shows significant wear.

We see this as a worn tool which resulted in a broken inner tension bolt.

We reject the complaint, but will replace the inner tension bolt on good will base.

We will do the following on a good will base.

  1. We will exchange the inner tension bolt with a new one.
  2. We will pack a second inner tension bolt in the return package with the tool.
  3. We recommend to use a new tool for further installations.

As soon as we have the inner tension bolts available, we will return the tool as described above.

This is the Tension bolt 2383HT01-04-2AY, the spare part for installation tool 2383HT01-1AY

further recommendation from Anemo Engineering:

the drawing of this tool mentions clearly that the maximum torque that can be applied should be between 3.7 and 4.5 Nm  ; it means the part should be installed with an adjustable torque handle!
