How to correctly install your Vlier Plunger?
Select the contact angle which provides the desired relationship between plunger side (disengagement) force and end force.
SOLVE THE EQUATION: FS = FE (Tan Ω)
Example:
- Given:
FE= 10 pounds from catalog for S58 at midway travel
Angle Ω = 30° from layout
2. Solution:
Tan 30° = 0.58
Substitute in above equation:
FS = FE (Tan Ω) = 10 (0.58) = 5.8 pounds
Variables:
FE = End force
FS = Side Force
Ω = Contact angle
β = Countersink angle
FR = Resultant force
L = D/2(1-cos Ω) = distance from load contact point to end of plunger/ball
D = Plunger/Ball diameter
DD = Detent hole diameter
C = Full travel (stroke)
HD = Countersink min. depth
B = C-L = distance from body to load contact point
* Equation and diagram omit frictional forces.
