The part that you request 51L3-3-2BC is not available anymore and obsolete.

51L3-3-2BC is a stainless steel regular version reverse base latch with holes 136/128 3,45mm-3,25mm

51L3-3-2BC is equipped with a lift spring.

The most appropriate replacement for 51L3-3-2BC  would be then V951L03-1-1BP in combination with the V951L61-4BP.

Take care: the holes  of V951L03-1-1BP are 3,6mm !! So you’ll have use bigger rivets to mount them.

When riveting the latch V951L03-1-1BP, just simply add the lift spring V951L61 underneath the latch to enable the lift feature.

It’s that straightforward!

The new lift spring V951L61-4BP is an additional feature, but the latch  can still be operated with or without the spring.

The purpose of the lift spring V951L61-4BP is to keep the latch in an open position, should the application require this feature.

Please find enclosed the drawings of  V951L03-1-1BP to compare and the drawing of the lift spring  V951L61-4BP.

Just as 51L120-1X1AA this latch has a reverse offset hook.
51L120-1X1AA and V951L04-4X1BP have the same mechanical properties, but V951L04-4X1BP has a lower lead time.

They are not stronger and have same mechanical properties.

This is the feedback from the manufacturing plant

I can only give my best guess for the BF-made parts which is this: From the real forces where the parts break they added a safety margin (which is a little less big for the stainless version but still big enough)

the max. forces mentioned in the new catalog (for both materials) are now mentioned to avoid confusion.

The suffixes differ from part number to part number.

BF is indeed an old suffix, it stands also for stainless steel.  However has been almost changed for all the series, so you’ll still find the BF on some of the parts, such as V18L01-1X1BF

BP is the most common suffix though to say that the parts are stainless steel.

There exists also CP , that one is different since that is stainless steel A4 quality (higher corrosion resistant)

 

Regarding the strength issue.

Yes: you are correct the stainless steel parts have less strength then the steel zinc plated version.

This could be caused by the drawhook that is less strong, but is not the case.  See picture below

Part number 51L1-1X1BF is and old part number and I know that they are nowadays difficult to get, due to tool wear.

I do not have the impression that the thickness of the drawhook has been modified, which would cause to have a weaker part.

My assumption is that the notes came afterwards.  Over time more tests have been carried out and more safety margins have been integrated, which explains the reduced force recommendations.

Another assumption is that I do think that the old catalog that dates from more then 50 years ago, was not that accurate.

 

What helps me also is the knowledge that the parts have been made interchangeable,

The only thing that can be different is the mix of material (a slightly different alloy, but that would not explain that big difference)

The BP version, most components, are made from 1.4301 which is V2A quality

V951L51-2BP and V951L51-5BP are camloc strikes  that are used on a bent surface. V951L51-2BP is a standard strike whereas V951L51-5BP has larger holes to mount.

1391L02-1X1BF and 1391L02-1X5BP are latches and are used in combination with the strikes V951L51-2BP or V951L51-5BP ; these camloc latches are somewhat special as they have a special drawhook.  We always recommend to purchase the latches 1391L02-1X1BF or 1391L02-1X5BP together with the matching strike.

The advantage of using either combination is the attained tensile strength ofV951L51-2BP V951L51-5BP and 1391L02-1X1BF and 1391L02-1X5BP  It goes up  to 5540 Newton. Whereas the normal tension latches in the V951L series can hold maximum only 1500 Newton.  No other company can offer such latch in such small size with such high tension load.  Please note, the strike we offer in combination with this latch is limited to 3800 Newton!  So If you need to go higher, please contact us.

The product you currently have, is a latch with the extra feature of a hasp.

So I guess you need  the hasp locking feature again.

The new part number I would recommend is the following

V951L01-1Y5AGV

This latch is adjustable +/-4mm

This latch comes with a hasp with diameter 6mm, please verify what 51L3B-1-1AA has.

This latch has holes with a diameter of 4,2mm (your current holes are smaller, this means you will have to change towards bigger rivets to fasten them)

The distance between the mounting holes is although smaller, and is 12,7mm

There is also another mounting method which is to weld, then it is part number
V951L01-1Y2AGV

 

The drawhook = strike that goes together with this latch.

Your current latch 51L3B-1-1AA is made for 500 pounds which is 2224 Newton

The latch we offer has an ultimate tensile strength of 2300 Newton, in case you use the strike V951L7-*AGV

V951L7-5AGV    comes with the same holes of 4,2mm

V951L7-1AGV    comes with smaller holes of 3,6mm

V951L7-2AZ        comes without holes

 

One good thing for sure, is that you change from cadmium plating to a more environmental friendly zinc plating that has been improved in the meantime.

51L3-3-2E is a reverse base regular version latch with lift spring with holes of 3,25mm-3,4mm, it is discontinued, please use the new compatible V951L series that are equipped without lift spring.

Not sure what the E stands for, it could be zinc plated or Aluminium, however Aluminium is not produced anymore.

So the new compatible latch would be V951L03-1-1AGV that have hole diameter of 3,6mm

It could be that the latch needs a nice appearance then we would recommend V951L03-1-1AD that is chrome plated.

 

The strike 51L7-3BF is a stainless steel strike with holes between 3,56mm-3,76mm and discontinued.

New compatible part is V951L7-1BP that come with holes of 3,6mm

Not sure why the customer might have opted for a stainless steel strike and not his latch,

So please use V951L03-1-1BP too which is the stainless steel version of the latch.

Difference

The big difference is that the camloc V951L01-1Y5BP latch has a hasp. This enables you to lock your application by sticking a padlock or security pin through the hole of the latch.

This is especially useful when the latch is used to close an unattended outdoor application. An example of an application: additional truck boxes. You wouldn't want anyone to steal your equipment while you're drinking coffee at the gasstation, would you?

We have done the measurement of the mounting holes with a digital caliper:

  • a sample of the 51L3-1-1BC shows a hole diameter of 0.1455” to 0.147”
  • a sample of the V951L03-1-1BP shows a hole diameter of 0.146” to 0.1475” .

This means they're exchangeable as the installation instructions advise a panel preparation with holes of 0.144" diameter. Both latches have slightly bigger holes, so this will fit 100% !
