Should I use a low, normal or heavy duty end force for my vlier plunger?

We can give  you recomendation about the correct vlier plunger, but need your help:
1) side load
a nose plunger is not recommended for side loads but this also depends on the application and the load it has to carry. Is it a direct side load or in an angle?   When side loads, please consider ball plungers.
2) the application
When selecting the correct part a lot depends on the application and usage (indexing, positioning, fastening, disconnecting). What is the load will it have to withstand will it be moved by hand or by machine is it carrying any weight? Also its important to take the detent in to account and the enviroment, temperature, corroding environment etc.
Detent:
Detents used with spring-loaded devices ensure proper engagement and disengagement of mating parts at a predetermined position and force. Proper detent design is critical for successful use of plungers. Improperly designed detents can cause excessive wear on nylon or Delrin plunger tips, potentially decreasing positioning accuracy and adversely affecting plunger holding capacity. As a general rule, the smaller the contact angle of the detent the easier the plunger will kick-out of it and the longer a nylon or delrin plunger tip will last.

Detent Design Guidelines
Select the contact angle which provides the desired relationship between plunger side (disengagement) force and end force.

trying to determine tap depth for use in assembly.  would like to know how far from ball tip do threads stop.  we can tap to a specific depth but no more and want to make sure this will work.

Answer:

I believe you are looking for the tolerance of these two dimensions;

Body length, 'B' dimension is .531 +/-.015.  The ball projection, 'C' dimension is .035 +/-.005.

We can help you with a stainless steel 316 ball plunger, however it's not possible to make all the components into 316, such as the spring or the ball Vlier This assembly is made up of the threaded body, ball bearing, and spring. Typically the ball and spring, although stainless, would not be made from a 300 series stainless steel. The ball is typically 440C stainless and the spring would be 17-7 stainless steel. Vlier can only make the body to 316 stainless. Other parts The body can be made in in 1.4401 (316) stainless steel, ball can be made in 1.3541 hardened stainless steel and the spring can be made in stainless steel 1.4568

The standard Spring Plunger line, the body is a 2 pc construction. It is made up of the threaded body and a threaded set screw which screws into the back of the body. This is the original design of the spring plunger.

The advantage of this design is that it gives the best side load force for plungers that are crimped at the plunger end.

The disadvantage is that if you need to install the plunger from the non-plunger end, it does not allow for this. This is why the other style plunger came into existence.

So the plunger with set screw (original spring plunger line) in back of body are not recommended to be installed using this set screw. They are designed to be installed at the Plunger end using a Vlier wrench. Wrenches are thread sizes. You probably do not see these at competitors because it was the original design of the spring plunger and is hand assembled. Wrenches are sold separately.
