Why is the leadtime so long for Turnlocks?

The leadtime is variable on each part number.

here is for instance an example on part MHSTLWO-9Z

Several processes, several subcontractors explain the long leadtime.

But the forging takes the longest: 4-6 weeks typically, as a production batch is only started when volumes are enough to combine several orders.

(here the leadtime increased most lately due to shortages in the market)

Plating is also not that easy as it needs to combine different orders to get enough parts in one batch.

So It involves two subcontractors, and each time also transport in between.

  1. Make the pin by cold forging     Subcontracted
  2. Cut the pin to length
  3. Drill a hole
  4. Weld the offset wing
  5. Zinc plate the pin                            Subcontracted
  6. Mount the belleville washers
  7. Mount the cross pin

Quality check in each phase

Using a stainless steel variant is quicker, but it eliminates only the plating, so not a big gain (and it’s way more expensive)
