Why do I need a higher torque than what is recommended?

QUESTION:

We use the tool number 2383HT01-2AY to swage PN 2383GF14-01BP grommets and are finding that we need up to 25Nm for our grommets to swage. The specified torque values on your website do not swage the grommets at all, even when we try to swage the grommet on its own without being in a part/panel. Our tool also breaks frequently right around the transition into the thread. Any advice?

ANSWER:

There are a number of things that can cause the tool to malfunction. If this issue comes up, the following things need to be checked:

  •  Does the tool run freely when operated without any load on it?
  •  Is there any debris/contamination, especially in case the grommets are installed in wet condition?
  •  Is the pulling thread damaged?

This is not an uncommon issue, which is why the new tool 2383HT03 has been developed.

It is reinforced as it uses a mandrel with bigger diameters, rather than pulling on the panel fastener studs inner thread.

The torque has been measured recently with the new tool, and the value was 13Nm.

With the old tool, there should not be too much of a diference.
